How to… |
You can back up and restore your projects using the Dashboard or the Manage projects dialog. Using the same tool, you can also transfer your projects to another computer.
To transfer one or more projects to another computer, follow these steps:
1. | In the Dashboard, select the projects you wish to transfer to the other computer. (Click the name of the first project, then press and hold down Ctrl, and click the rest of the projects.) |
Note: If a project is open in memoQ, the Dashboard is not available. If this is the case, choose the Manage projects command from the Project menu. This displays the Manage projects dialog where you can select the projects the same way as in the Dashboard.
Important: Make sure that you select My computer in the Server URL box in the Dashboard or in the Manage projects dialog. You cannot transfer online projects this way.
2. | Below the list of projects, click Backup selected. A Save As dialog appears. Select the folder where you want to save the backup file, then click Save. |
Note: memoQ saves the backup file with the .mqbkf (memoQ backup file) extension. The backup file contains the documents, settings, and resources (translation memories, term bases, and LiveDocs corpora) attached to the project.
Important: memoQ includes a binary copy of all files in the backup package. Your project will look the same on the other computer, but you cannot use this file in other translation tools or different versions of memoQ.
3. | Copy the .mqbkf file to removable media such as a USB drive, or send the file to the other computer over the network. |
4. | On the other computer – the target computer from now on –, save the .mqbkf file to a folder that you will be able to access from memoQ. |
5. | On the target computer, start memoQ. |
Important: Make sure that you use the same version of memoQ on the target computer. If the source computer has version 4.5, you need to use 4.5 too. You can use a different build, though: you can transfer a project from 4.5.20 to 4.5.25, for example.
6. | In the Dashboard, below the list of projects, click the Restore from backup file command link. The memoQ restore from backup wizard starts. |
7. | In the first wizard screen, click the ellipsis button. An Open dialog appears. Find and select the .mqbkf file that you saved to the target computer in Step 4. |
The path and name of the .mqbkf file appears in the Package to restore field. After you select the package to restore, click Next.
8. | memoQ reads through the package, and displays the second screen of the wizard. |

At the top half of this screen, you can select where the transferred projects will be created. At the bottom half of the screen, you can select what projects you want to transfer from the package. (If the package contains multiple projects, you do not have to transfer all of them.)
Note: If you already have a copy of the project on the target computer, you can choose to update it. To do this, click the Add link next to the name of the project. The link will change to Update. In this case, memoQ does not create a new project on the target computer. Instead, it replaces the existing project with the new contents.
Important: If you update a project on the target computer, all changes made on that computer will be lost. memoQ also overwrites all existing translation memories, term bases, or LiveDocs corpora attached to the project.
After you make your choices on this wizard page, click Next.
9. | memoQ displays the Ready to restore screen of the wizard. At this point, you can still click Back, and change your choices (you can even select another .mqbkf file). However, if you are ready to perform the transfer, click Finish. |
memoQ restores the selected projects from the package. These projects are now identical to those on the original computer.
